Amit Shankar Dey, a Statistician with our Corporate Planning & Review Team, has been actively volunteering since April 2021 and has already completed 199 shifts clocking a total of 1046 hours. In the month of September alone, he managed to reach out to 30,000 people and get them vaccinated.

Amarnath Yogi, a TPM & Training Co-Ordinator with FMM, has been constantly steering activities since April 2021, around key social issues such as, education and literacy, helping senior citizens, engaging with the differently abled and working for animal welfare.

What I learnt as a volunteer?
In this difficult situation, working as a volunteer is an amazing experience. As a volunteer I have learnt how to manage
manpower engagement and developed leadership quality working with this group. It felt great to help people who needed plasma. I was able to help other needy people as well. I am thankful to Tata steel for giving me this opportunity and instilling a sense of responsibility. I am especially thankful to my department representatives, Mr. Pradeep Gupta and Mr. Pankaj Singh. I am grateful for being a part of this wonderful opportunity and experience. Thank you, Tata steel!

Not all superheroes wear capes.
I feel blessed to be selected as a volunteer at the vaccination centre and be a part of the purposeful job of eradication
of the dreadful Covid-19. I extend my gratitude to the Almighty and officials for giving me an opportunity to serve mankind. My involvement during this “Mass Vaccination Process” was full of beautiful moments. To remember a few, like helping elderly and differently abled to get their shots as early as possible without having to wait in the long queue. Again, challenges like convincing confused people (influenced by various myths and misconceptions regarding vaccination from social media), the importance of vaccination and controlling the mob at the centres while maintaining the necessary protocols of the pandemic were of great excitement and satisfaction within oneself. Last but not the least, I got the feeling of being a super hero who is able to help people and inspire others for contributing towards social services. Given an opportunity I look forward to take upon more such activities for noble social cause.

The wonderful experience of volunteering.
This pandemic has been an exceptionally difficult time in everyone’s life. Volunteering is a wonderful experience. It
helped us develop our skills of working with people. On our part, we loved to engage with our community and to do good in any way we could. We have found our involvement was both humbling and eye-opening; hearing of all the tragedies during the COVID-19 pandemic. We felt quite helpless and wanted to help out in any way we could. Throughout the pandemic, we have been inspired by the relentless work of all the hospital staff, so this was a great way we could show our appreciation and keep up their morale. We are extremely grateful to have been a part of such a valuable project.

Volunteers as a bridge between medical staff and society.
It was the time of lockdown in 2020, when all were safe at home; I found an opportunity through the covid volunteering at
Tata Steel. Till date I am providing my voluntary services during covid apart from my company work. Not only did it give me an opportunity to serve but also to learn some medical terminologies and procedures used in covid testing. I shared this knowledge with my colleagues and society and was able to remove the prevalent confusion among them. We as covid volunteers were able to act as a bridge between medical staff and the society. All relevant and required real-time information and knowledge was shared in society so as prevent any chaos or miscommunication in this pandemic. I feel proud to be able to serve the company and society in these difficult times.

Not everyone get the opportunity to connect with the community. When I joined Tata Steel, I was drawn to the volunteering
programs offered by the company. I grabbed this opportunity and started contributing my time and skill in every small way that I could. I contributed both individually and as a team. Tata Volunteering Week has been an amazing experience with a plethora of volunteering opportunities. We could be part of
different support groups helping to create impact at ground level by creating audiobooks, delivering Model United Nations presentation or helping the youth prepare for their future by writing e-mail Etiquettes. Apart from the volunteering team who never missed on keeping me updated on teaching activities or being a part of the Covid vaccination drive in the city; Tata Engage app provided a whole new dimension to the volunteering experience. There is no better joy than in giving-and to expect nothing in return. That’s the kind of joy being a volunteer has given to me.
I volunteered teaching hours for the kids and became a mentor for someone’s first interview. This was a huge responsibility and something I took as a challenge and as a serious assignment I developed fun quizzes, ensured regular home assignments and support them into being the best uninhibited version of themselves. In return, they helped me overcome my stress and see the world in a different light altogether. As it warmed my heart to see eager bunch of underprivileged and handicapped kids infused with so much optimism and an array of dreams-it put my everyday whining to shame. The true meaning of humanity.
Since a very young age, I had the zeal to volunteer and give back to society. I had started volunteering on my own capacity
at the residential society where I live. I would distribute essentials to the needy daily wage earners working in my society. Then Tata Steel gave to me an opportunity to contribute in other ways. I have been volunteering at covid screening centre, vaccination centres and testing centres for almost a year now. I am really grateful to the company for giving me an opportunity to serve and contribute. While volunteering at these places, I learnt a lot of things. I watched the healthcare workers at the hospital grappling with the scenario with utmost patience and putting in so much of hard work. By observing them, I learnt to control my anger and mastered self-patience. I have also been able to improve my listening skills. Volunteering has also taught me to be sensitive especially when dealing with covid positive patients, who already feel lonely. They need to be treated with care and love. Now I believe in keeping the connections with friends, family and the community alive, because being there for the people is humanity.

Bridging the gap.
I've often heard people saying that the best knowledge and experiences are exchanged when people from different sections of
society interact with each other. Volunteering is something that makes the aforementioned sentence easily possible. It's also one of the best things that help bridge the gap between society and the people who want to serve it. As we all know that our country is buckled under the weight of Covid-19 and people from various strata of society need each other’s help, whether it is mentally, physically, economically or financially. At this crucial time I want to thank Suman Sir and the whole Tata Steel CSR unit for supporting the society and giving us volunteers the opportunity to do something productive and positive for the people in the society. It was incredible to be the part of the volunteering team where I got to learn way more things from my seniors as well as from my juniors. Since last four years I've been volunteering with different organisations but the last three months were the most important period in my tenure as here I've learnt how to manage people of all age groups together in such a difficult and compromised situation. Starting from the data filling work to the on field crowd managing work, it was something that taught me the perspective of different people who reside in our society. Moreover, it was one of the best experiences I've ever got till now. On my ending note I want to conclude that I'm still naivebefore the many talented and enthusiastic people who are working in this volunteering task. I'll always try to give my best for good. Hope to learn more things and come across more versatile experiences in future.
